Activities

As well as offering combination Spanish and Sports courses, La Herradura has a full social programme which all students are welcome to take part in. It includes extra-curricular activities to suit a wide range of budgets and tastes. You can make the most of your time in Montevideo, socialise with other students, practice your Spanish on the locals, learn about the history and culture of Uruguay, and have a go at different sports and activities. Some typical activities:

Horseriding in the countryside
Tango classes
A barbecue on the school terrace
Wine tasting and a guided tour of a vineyard
A day trip to Punta del Este, Colonia or any other city
Camping and hiking weekend in the country side
Museum or art gallery
Walking tour of the Old City
4x4 safari
City tour by bus

A list of activities is placed in the entrance hall every Monday, where you can sign up for the activities that interest you. The activities are also presented at the weekly Welcome meeting. The activities vary from week to week and throughout the year. Some may depend on the weather and the availability of equipment. Some of the activities are free, others have a cost depending on the type of activity.

Free Activities

The following activities are free (or in the case of the bar and restaurant, each person pays for their food and drinks). The students are not accompanied on the trip, but the school staff assist in the planning (suggesting activities to the students, making reservations, planning public transport etc.):

1. Tango There's a free tango class in a cultural centre a few blocks from the school.

2. Parque Rodó The local park has an outdoor photography exhibition, a lake with boats for hire, paths and bridges for walking a weekly market, and live music on Sundays.

3. Backpackers meeting The local "Couchsurfing" group has a regular meeting in a bar. Our students go to practice their Spanish on the locals, meet other travellers and sample the local nightlife.

4. Night out A group outing to a local bar or restaurant.

5. Tango bar Montevideo has several tango bars where you can enjoy a few drinks while listening to live music and watching the dancers.

6. Guided tour Free guided tours are available in the following places of cultural and historical interest: Palacio Legislativo (Parliament), Teatro Solís (South America's oldest working theatre), the botanical gardens and the Museo Blanes art gallery.

7. Seasonal events We let the students know about free events in and around the city. Recent examples include an outdoor rock concert, games of Ultimate Frisbee on the beach, T'ai Chi and Aerobox classes on the beach, and an astronomical observation.
