Teach English in a rural school in Maldonado

A rural primary school in Maldonado needs an English teacher. There are two classes with a total of 25 children, one group aged 5 to 8 and the other aged 8 to 12. The school is open from Monday until Friday from 09:30 to 14:30 and lunch is from 12:00 to 13:00. The volunteer can teach: English or Sports or both English and Sports.
The rural school is situated in the province of Maldonado and the small city is called Punta Ballena, near to the coast and the famous beach town Punta del Este.
The capital of Uruguay, Montevideo is 170km away and well connected by public buses.
The rural school is next to the biggest arboretum in South America which boasts more than 470 different species of native and exotic trees and shrubs.
There are 2 rooms for classes (one for the younger children and one for the older), a kitchen, a bath, a wide hallway to have lunch and another very small room. Outside there is a greenhouse for vegetables.
Perfectly located if you want to combine it with a leisurely trip along the sunshine coast of Uruguay during the afternoons, or to embark on an exploration of Uruguay’s giant neighbour Brazil or Argentina during the week ends.
• What is the volunteer’s role?
Teach English and / or Sports with basic resources. You can also assist the co-coordinator in planning more afternoon activities for the children.
Books are available, but if you want to bring your own teaching materials, you are more than welcome to do so. Some experience of teaching is an advantage. You must be ready to live and work with basic resources and get involved in a deprived local community.
Working hours: Monday until Friday. Working hours will be arranged on arrival, but will always be during the opening hours of the school 09:30 to 14:30. The school is closed on national holidays.
We require a minimum of 3 months for this volunteer position.
